Paradise | Maldives

— The Maldives (6th – 10th, July 2018)  There are a couple common misconceptions about the Maldives; 1) that it is only for the well-off, as it’s really expensive, and 2) that it is a place where you only go to for your honeymoon. Now don’t get me wrong, I acquired these exact misconceptions before I actually went there myself. From a young age, I … Continue reading Paradise | Maldives

[5/8] MESTIC: In my last few posts, i've highlighted some oddly amazing sustainable alternatives to our conventional fabrics such as spider silk, banana leather and so forth... if you think those were unusual, get ready to be mind-blown because guess what @mestic_official ’s textile is made of? COW DUNG! Smells like innovation at its finest to me. 🐄 Excessive cow dung from intensive dairy farming has led to an over-saturation of the soil in various European countries. This is why Dutch designer, Jalila Essaïdi, proposed to make the industry more circular by using the manure from cattle to produce bio-plastic and sustainable fibres - a process known as Mestic. Manure from these cows are made up of 35% cellulose, so with the global quantities of excess manure, there would be enough cellulose to meet the demand for fibres and replace cotton, which is currently a crop with the highest carbon footprint. 🌱 Supported by the @hmfoundation and launched by Inspidere, the fabric is energy efficient, renewable and totally odourless... holy cow!! 🐮 #hkig #fashion #sustainability #sustainablefashion #outfits #ethical #ecofriendly #vegan #textiles #innovate #slowfashion #green #cows
[4/8] ZOA LEATHER: Although there’s no shortage of sustainable leather alternatives with the numerous innovative solutions led by fruit waste 🍌 (pineapples, bananas, apples, grapes & more), when it comes to taking the cruelty component out of the leather industry - there’s one company in particular that's in the spotlight. 🌾 Modern Meadow uses lab-grown cells that are fermented and multiplied into collagen proteins to assemble into animal-free, man-made leather which looks and feels exactly like animal leather. 🐮 The Zoa leather can withstand any density, shape, texture & is highly adaptable into various uses. The same technology and innovation is being applied into the food industry to create plant-based meats - but while the latter is already being mass-produced and consumed, bio-fabricated leather is yet to be used by modern fashion brands. Just imagine - how amazing would it be to live in a world where animals don't have to suffer for the clothes on our backs? (Or on our legs in this case) 🐮🌻 @modernmeadow #hkig #sustainability #sustainablefashion #ecofriendly #vegan #veganleather #environment #mindfulness #ethicalfashion #textiles #leather #animalrights #fashion #outfit
Walked into 2019 like 🕺🏻Last year was a year of achievements for me, especially in regards to sustainability - thanks to my professors at @scadhk - @rob_co & @cristina_kountiou - for presenting me with endless opportunities, including an eco trip to Sri Lanka, participation in the @youthfashionsummit, where I was able to meet and work with such inspiring, like-minded peers to showcase our ideas at the @copenhagenfashionsummit! While interning at two amazing pre-loved fashion companies - @joinhula & @vestiaireco, i hardly shopped fast-fashion and if i did - i made sure it was necessary and not something i’d only wear once, recycled / donated my clothes multiple times & reduced consumption in general, especially with single-use plastic. Then I joined the @luxiders_magazine community as an editorial contributor, thanks to @belvis_soler ✨ It’s been real, and I hope to achieve much more this year - esp in terms of informing / influencing many others with this insta page! Wishing everyone a fantastic one ahead ☺️ #hkig #sustainablefashion #sustainability #mindfulness
[3/8] PIÑATEX: The detrimental impact of mass leather production encouraged Carmen, a leathergoods expert, that a sustainable alternative had to be introduced. So after seven years of R&D, she created a non-woven leather textile with the use of pineapple leaves - another byproduct of agricultural waste. 🍍🍍🍍 Her company, Ananas Anam, developed the first automated machine to assist with the process of decortication, which extracts the long fibres from the leaves that turn into a mesh, which is then transported to Spain for finishing touches, giving Piñatex its leather-like appearance. The sustainably-sourced & cruelty-free textile is now used in clothing, footwear, fashion accessories and furnishings - with a low environmental impact and high social responsibility. ♻️ #fashion #sustainability #sustainablefashion #ethical #clothing #textiles #fibres #pineapples #mindfulness #environment #philippines #shopping #leather #shoes
