Around 3 years ago, the Ethiopian government decided to venture out into the apparel industry in order to attract foreign investment and boost its economic growth. They identified "a strong global demand for inexpensive clothes, low cost of setting up garment factories, and an abundance of low-skilled jobs the industry could create." Today, the Hawassa Industrial Park employs 25,000 workers that produce clothing for major Western retailers, and boasts the lowest working wages in the global garment industry, of US$26 per month. ‼️ Less than a dollar per day is way below a living wage, with which workers (mainly women) from low-income households can barely afford housing, food and basic necessities - resulting in low levels of productivity and high attrition. 🚷 The Ethiopian government needs to think beyond the surface of creating employment and elevate the quality of those jobs in order to add value to its apparel exports. Despite having plans to legislate for zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050, the UK government rejected recommendations by the Environmental Audit Committee when they submitted their “Fixing Fashion” report, which outlined targets that major retailers need to meet in order for the fashion industry to operate in a more sustainable manner. A frustrating response during a time where the fashion industry needs greater support and leadership from the government so that zero emission targets can be taken seriously. . Since the challenge to decrease emissions lies outside of a brand's immediate control, retailers need to go beyond the surface and achieve stronger collaboration with suppliers to become more sustainable, whether it's sourcing ethically or switching to renewable energy. . A great example is @motherofpearl ‘s new No Frills line - a collection that has traced it’s footprint right back to the sourcing of textiles. It uses cotton from certified organic, socially responsible farms in Egypt and sources its wool from sheep farms in South America that don’t practice mulesing - woven at Austrian mills that use less chemicals. The creative director of sustainable fashion brand, Amy Powney, found that operating in this manner was actually slightly cheaper than conventional methods as the process is kept close and passes through less hands = less markups. She also feels that the lack of government regulation in the UK severly impacts the level of transparency of local brands & retailers. In the past year, Ralph Lauren introduced a 100% recycled + recyclable "Earth Polo"; made entirely from 12 plastic bottles that would've otherwise ended up in a landfill and using a carbon dyeing process that uses significantly less amount of water. These polos were created as part of the company's commitment to recycle 170 million plastic bottles by 2025. ♻️ . Moreover, in Ralph Lauren’s 2019 Global Citizenship & Sustainability Report, it outlines plans to become more sustainable with its Design for Change strategy. They aim to set 100% renewable energy targets by the end of year and train their design + merchandising teams on circularity and use 100% sustainably-sourced materials (ie. cotton) by 2025. They’re even looking at increasing female representation at factory management levels by 25% - which to me is new as most brands simply say they want to reduce gender-based discrimination or empower female workers but don't state which specific aspect they’re trying to cover! 🤷🏻‍♀️ . These targets are ambitious, but happy to see more luxury brands moving in the right direction, including several other brands from powerhouses LVMH & Kering announcing sustainability initiatives such as working towards full traceability and a 25% reduction in energy consumption by 2020! 🙌🏼 . Did you know that a completely different textile can be created from the cotton plant? 😯 Cupro is a regenerated cellulose that derives from cotton linter - the tiny silky fibres that stick out from a cotton seed and are too small to spin. Similarly to Tencel and Modal, Cupro is a plant-based fibre that is chemically-processed to be mass-produced. Currently, Japanese manufacture, Asahi Kasei, is the only owner of this textile - which is said to be as smooth and luxurious as silk, but a more eco-friendly alternative! Unlike silk, which comes from silkworms, Cupro is 100% vegan and cruelty-free, and since it's plant-based - it's also biodegradable and easily recyclable. ♻️ Although it's chemically processed, being produced in a close-loop system allows for the chemicals and wastewater to be reused. Being invented in the 1900's, i'm so curious as to why I've never heard of it or seen it on any clothing labels before, but definitely hope to wear it someday!
